How technology might help with the labour shortage in the cleaning sector

After reading the article entitled 'How tech can ease the cleaning industry's manpower crunch', by GERMii (2021) , I learn about how future labour will be complemented by robots. First and foremost, since the COVID-19 outbreak, cleanliness has been one of the highest priorities. The article stated that because of the COVID-19 outbreak, that Harold Van Haltren, CEO of pathogen mitigation company GERMII, would be exploring the trends that will influence public hygiene. The article also stated that , "By introducing Whiz, an AI vacuum cleaning robot that has GERMII’s technology, which transforms ultraviolet C (UV-C) into a concentrated beam of light that is lethal to viruses, bacteria, and pathogens able to disinfect surfaces without relying on chemicals and sterilize the environment." As a result, having sterile and safe business premises provides peace of mind. With its capability of learning routes and creating reports, the robot saves the facilities manager time. GERMii also stated that while using the robots , the cleaners will be expected to concentrate on more crucial chores, including sterilizing "high-touch, high-risk, or difficult-to-clean areas" as a result in paragraph seven. Lastly, according to the photo of the article, it has a 2D/3D camera (sensor), and with its small build, it can move around in a crowded area without any difficulties.

While the robot , Whiz, can learn routes and navigate around freely as it is cleaning and it benefits cleaners in future goals, such boosting labour manual due to its 2D/3D camera (sensor) , I feel that there are a few disadvantages to using the Whiz whereby the batteries have a short battery life and when the robot is cleaning, objects such as twigs, can clog up the mechanism.  Not only that , but with the capability of learning routes, the cleaning robots tend not do what they were programmed for.

One disadvantage is that when the robot is cleaning and navigating around freely, small objects can be clogged- up in the mechanism. Baswal ( 2023 ), stated  that the cleaning machine can be defeated when small objects get clogged up when it is specifically designed to navigate around obstacle. Thus , this can make the machine malfunction and it is costly to repair. The author also stated a second disadvantages whereby the machine has a short battery life making the cleaning job incomplete. When the machine is charged, it can only last for a roughly 2 hours and its recharging time may take up to several hours.

The third disadvantage is that the cleaning robots tend to not do what they were programmed for. McCabe (2019 )  stated that “It might spend 20 minutes cleaning the same small section of the house and then miss an entire room.” Thus, if this applied in a work environment, it would also miss a few cleaning spots.

Despite many disadvantages, Whiz is a powerful, cutting-edge cleaning tool. Cleaning robots are highly good at executing the duties they are designed to accomplish, according to Flynn (2022). They can be configured to avoid locations with plenty of potential hazards. The "sophisticated sensors" used in today's "high-quality" cleaning robots will lessen the likelihood of the machine becoming trapped or bumping into things (Flynn, 2022, p.10).

In conclusion, cleaning robot technology will eventually benefit and reduce the workloads of cleaners and workers making a safe and clean environment. As a result, reading these articles teaches us more about technology, how robots will supplement human labour in the future, and how these robots will make the world a cleaner and better place for everyone. However, having this robot does come at a disadvantage as it is a need to maintain the robots properly and learn to use it well as this robot can easily malfunction and when it does, the cost of repairing it will be very costly.

Critical reflection

Module learning

At the start of the module, my goal was to improve both my communication and presenting abilities. Also, after finishing the module every week, my aspirations began to expand. For instance, I recall being called out for mischievous behaviour on the first day of class, which made me realize how crucial it is to behave well both inside and outside of the classroom. Moving on , I also learned how to use critical thinking and writing skills in class. For instances, I had learned about Rodgers’ reflective cycle where I need to know the reality, causes ,effects ,goal ,possible change and testing the hypothesis and the outcome of changes.

From then, I have learnt paraphrasing, summarizing ,citing sources, and avoiding plagiarism which is one of the new goals that I needed. Although I am still having trouble with all of them, I do understand how to apply it and know the importance of applying it in my report. It is a bit tedious I might say like for example, I need to keep paraphrasing and citing the sources but it benefits me in the end as plagiarism allegations can cause a student suspended or expelled.

Going on to the group project, I discover that I am learning a lot from it. For instance, even though I am the group's reporter, I have discovered that having individual roles does not require that we as a team sticking to those roles and waiting for our team leader to perform tasks. I've discovered that the greatest way to solve a problem in a team is to keep initiating the project or report and speaking everyone's ideas.

Lastly, the module taught me on how to do well in presentation and to how to be confident in myself while presenting to the class. For example, to be confident, I need to keep on practicing beforehand and try to understand what I am presenting. Not only that, during presenting, I have learnt to make eye contact with everyone and not to stand behind any objects as to grab the audience attention.

Project learning

Coming up with a solution was the focus of my research project's final endeavour. I discovered, for instance, that to determine the nature of our proposed solution, we would need to conduct both primary and secondary research. Thus, thinking creatively and stepping outside of my comfort zone, I spoke with 10 pharmacists to gain their opinions on our problem topic. This helped me become better at communicating with strangers and learning more about the subject of my research. Moving on to the report, I have learnt that teamwork is important because of what we had been through. We had a group meeting to discuss the issue since me and my team weren't doing enough to start the report and kept depending on the team leader. Through resolving it, we gain a better understanding of one another's viewpoints and ideas as well as learn how to put the past disagreement or issue behind us and move on. From then, we initiate stuffs more and practice for our presentation too. I learned from this project experience that to successfully complete a team project, we must work together, communicate our thoughts to one another, and take comments and criticism from all of them.

Summary draft 3 ( Syahiir_S-RR_Draft3 )

After reading the article regarding 'How tech can ease the cleaning industry's manpower crunch', by GERMii (2021) , I learn about how future labour will be complemented by robots. First and foremost, since the COVID-19 outbreak, cleanliness has been one of the highest priorities. Because of the COVID-19 outbreak, the article stated that Harold Van Haltren, CEO of pathogen mitigation company GERMII, will be exploring the trends that will influence public hygiene. From the article it also stated that , "By introducing Whiz, an AI vacuum cleaning robot that has GERMII’s technology, which transforms ultraviolet C (UV-C) into a concentrated beam of light that is lethal to viruses, bacteria, and pathogens able to disinfect surfaces without relying on chemicals and sterilize the environment." As a result, having sterile and safe business premises provides peace of mind. With its capability of learning routes and creating reports, it saves the facilities manager time and cleaners. Whereby GERMii also stated that the cleaners will be expected to concentrate on more crucial chores, including sterilizing "high-touch, high-risk, or difficult-to-clean areas" as a result. Lastly, for its features from the photo it is given from the article, it has a 2D/3D camera (sensor), and with its small build, it can move around in a crowded area without any difficulties.

While the robot , Whiz, can learn routes and navigate around freely and cleaning ,where it benefits cleaners in the future purposes such as supporting labour manual due to its 2D/3D camera (sensor) , I feel that there are a few disadvantages to it whereby the batteries have a short battery life and when the robot is cleaning, objects such as twigs, can be clog up.  Not only that , with the capability of learning routes, the cleaning robots tend not do what they were program for.

One disadvantage is that when the robot is cleaning and navigating around freely, small objects can be clog up whereby  Baswal ( 2023 ), he stated  that cleaning machine can be defeated when small objects get clog up when it is specifically designed to navigate around obstacle. Thus , it can make the machine malfunction where it is costly to repair. Not only that, but he also stated the second disadvantages whereby that the machine has a short battery life making the cleaning job incomplete and when the machine is charged, it can only last for a roughly 2 hours and its recharging time may take up to several hours.

The next article also discusses the use of technology to support manual labour. The article which says, “Advantages and disadvantages of robotic vacuum cleaners-India” by Shareef (2023) , tells us that even though it can navigate around and clean floors, in paragraph eight of the article it stated that “ Robotic vacuum cleaner come with short battery life and in some cases, they will not be able to complete the cleaning assignment.” Thus, in some cases, where workers or cleaners tend to forget to charge this battery and when in time of use, the robot will either not complete its cleaning assignment or not do anything due to its battery out of charge.

The third disadvantages where the cleaning robots tend to not do what they were program for, by McCabe (2019 ) , stated that “It might spend 20 minutes cleaning the same small section of the house and then miss an entire room.” Thus, if we apply this in a work environment, it will also miss a few cleaning spots. Not only that, but the video given by McCabe on the website is also a proof that the robots are not the best technology yet as it could not do what they are program for and hopefully soon, these robots will be better and eventually help reducing our cleaning jobs.

In conclusion, from these articles, I think technology will eventually benefit and reduce the workloads of these cleaners and workers making a safe and clean environment. As a result, reading these articles teaches us more about technology, how robots will supplement human labour in the future, and how these robots will make the world a cleaner and better place for everyone. However, having this robot do come at a disadvantage as we must maintain them properly and learn to use it well as this robot can easily malfunction and when it does, the cost of repairing it will be very costly.

For example, from the article “Advantages and disadvantages of floor cleaning machine’ by Ak Baswal ( 2023 ), in number three of “disadvantages of floor cleaning machine”, it stated  that cleaning machine can be defeated when small objects get clog up when it is specifically designed to navigate around obstacle. Thus , it can make the machine malfunction where it is costly to repair. Not only that, but the article also stated that the machine has a short battery life making the cleaning job incomplete and when the machine is charged, it can only last for a roughly 2 hours and its recharging time may take up to several hours.

The next article also discusses the use of technology to support manual labour. The article which says, “Advantages and disadvantages of robotic vacuum cleaners-India” by Umar Shareef (2023) , tells us that even though it can navigate around and clean floors, in paragraph eight of the article it stated that “ Robotic vacuum cleaner come with short battery life and in some cases, they will not be able to complete the cleaning assignment.”

Lastly, I would like to share another article which also says about “ Dog Poop, Dirty Rugs, and Other Disappointing Truths About Robot Vacuums” by Liam McCabe (2019 )  . In the article, paragraph number seven, a video was shown and it stated that “It might spend 20 minutes cleaning the same small section of the house and then miss an entire room.” Thus, if we apply this in a work environment, it will also miss a few cleaning spots.

In conclusion, from these articles, I think technology will eventually benefit us and reduce the workloads of these cleaners making a safe and clean environment. As a result, reading these articles teaches us more about technology, how robots will supplement human labour in the future, and how these robots will make the world a cleaner and better place for everyone. Lastly, everything has advantages and disadvantages. It is up to us how we maintain this technology and use them in the end.

How tech can ease the cleaning industry’s manpower crunch (govinsider.asia)

Summary reader response draft 1

After reading the article regarding 'How tech can ease the cleaning industry's manpower crunch', by GERMii (2021) , I learn about how future labour will be complemented by robots. First and foremost, since the COVID-19 outbreak, cleanliness has been one of the highest priorities. Lastly, for its features from the photo it is given from the article, it has a 2D/3D camera (sensor), and with its small build, it can move around in a crowded area without any difficulties.

While the robot, Whiz, can keep the environment or surrounding clean and move around without any difficulties with it’s 2D/3D camera (sensor), I feel that there are also other types of robots out there that are similar to it which will benefit  us too in the future purposes such as supporting manual labour making GERMii not the only company that does this.

For example, from the article “For Robots, it’s a time to shine (and Maybe Disinfect)’ by Lisa Prevost ( 2020 ), it says that there is  an AI robot, the Neo floor-scrubbing robot also does create its own maps of a facility and make staff to focus on making sure the ‘high touch’ areas are cleaned more frequently.” Not only that, for its features that was shown in the article , it has an oddly huge design compared to Whiz, it is still able to move around in crowded areas due to its camera sensors that would make it stop if there are any obstacles in its way.

The next article also discusses the use of technology to support manual labour. The article which says, “NEA exploring table-cleaning robot at hawker centres to support manual labour” by Ang Qing (2022) , tells us that “hawker centres may get an automated table cleaners under the National Environment Agency’s (NEA) plan to support manual labour.” The robot's functions are essentially the same as those of the earlier articles described above, where it can also assist and complement cleaners to keep the environment tidy. The difference is that it just cleans tables. A photo shown in the article shows its compact formed body shape and attributes allow it to roam through hawker centres without disturbing the community.

Lastly, I would like to share another article which also says about “ How commercial cleaning robots complement in-person shopping attitudes” by Avidbots (2022)  . In the article, paragraph number five, due to the epidemic, people bought things online, but now that it has receded, they are starting to purchase in stores. Additionally, merchants are finding it difficult to meet customers' expectations for clean environments due to a labour shortage. Thus, they introduce a fully autonomous floor scrubbing robot name Neo where its function is to “enhance and simplify floor care and surface disinfection and also gives the flexibility to thrive.” As for its features shown by a video in the article, it has an oddly huge design and a built-in sensor that allows it to move around and avoid obstacles making it at a disadvantage comparing to the other robots that was said earlier.

From these articles, I feel that Whiz, the AI vacuum cleaning robot from GERMII, is much better from the other three robots by comparing with its features and functions.

In conclusion, I think technology will eventually benefit us and reduce the workloads of these cleaners making a safe and clean environment. As a result, reading these articles teaches us more about technology, how robots will supplement human labour in the future, and how these robots will make the world a cleaner and better place for everyone.
