Awareness

“I contend that we (engineers) are undervalued because of our widespread

inability to explain what we do to the general public (and why it is so important).

It is one of the hardest goals to accomplish, to be able to boil down difficult

concepts into a short and easily understood presentation or elevator pitch.”

Marybeth Miceli, President, Miceli Infrastructure Consulting, USA (2011)

From this phrase, I feel that this is true as most of us (engineers) tend to have an incapability to describe their own job scopes and how their jobs are important and crucial. For example, some of us will say ‘ ouh we work as engineers in a aerospace sector... build planes and fix planes.’ but the society does not have that imagination of us doing that. Thus, we tend to get less credit due to lack of awareness about our work. Society tends to think that we engineers are simply doing designs and software like an architecture or a programmer but there are more than it meets the eye. Hence, we as an engineer need to improve on our communication skills to get the general public awareness

  1. Content – Content is well done as they are able to give real life example on what us engineers would say during presentation. Hence, able to make a connection with reader. There is also an overall statement talking about what to improve on as engineers.

Organization – Organization is done well as it went from talking about the quote to example to their perspective and lastly a conclusion where they talk about what needs to be improved on. There is a flow when reading.

Language – Minor grammar mistakes and weird paraphrasing.

    But overall well written :)
