Draft 2

After reading the article regarding 'How tech can ease the cleaning industry's manpower crunch', by GERMii (2021) , i learn about how future labour will be complemented by robots. First and foremost, since the COVID-19 outbreak, cleanliness has been one of the highest priorities. Because of the COVID-19 outbreak, the article stated that Harold Van Haltren, CEO of pathogen mitigation company GERMII, will be exploring the trends that will influence public hygiene. From the article, "By introducing Whiz, an AI vacuum cleaning robot that has GERMII’s technology, which transforms ultraviolet C (UV-C) into a concentrated beam of light that is lethal to viruses, bacteria, and pathogens able to disinfect surfaces without relying on chemicals and sterilize the environment." As a result, having sterile and safe business premises provides peace of mind. With its capability of learning routes and creating reports, it saves the facilities manager time and cleaners. The cleaners will be expected to concentrate on more crucial chores, including sterilizing "high-touch, high-risk, or difficult-to-clean areas" as a result. Lastly, for its features, it has a 2D/3D camera (sensor), and with its small build, it can move around in a crowded area without any difficulties.

In conclusion, I think technology will eventually benefit us and reduce the workloads of these cleaners making a safe and clean environment. As a result, reading these articles helps us learn more about technology and how future labour will be complemented by robots.

Introduction

Dear Mr Brad Blackstone,

My name is Syahiir and I am writing to get you to know more about me as your student. I have graduated from Nanyang Polytechnic with a diploma in Manufacturing Engineering and was working in the aerospace sector for 5 years. I eventually made the decision to further my studies in hopes to upgrade my skills and knowledge in the field of engineering. Hence, currently I am pursuing my bachelors in Mechanical Design and Manufacturing Engineering.

In my previous few applications, I was rejected by Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) but I did not give up and eventually got the placement offer.

My goals in this programme is to further develop my technical knowledge and improve on public speaking skills as well as effective communication.

Having to oversee a few projects and working closely with my colleagues in my previous job, I believe that I will be leading a team of future machinists and engineers.

“Teamwork makes the dream work.” This is a phrase that I found applies to the working world from my time working at Collins Aerospace. I have learnt that being able to work with others is essential, especially in teams or groups. From getting to learn the basics from the machinist on how to operate the machines , applying of different measurement instruments and watching how everyone come together to achieve a common goal motivates me. Therefore, my love and passion for engineering has never wavered.

One area for me to improve on is gaining more exposure in public speaking. Due to the lack of exposure, I tend to find  myself feeling uneasy and anxious when I have to address to a large crowd. I work well behind the scenes. However, I know to get everyone to achieve a common goal, addressing to a large crowd is inevitable. Hence, I see the potential for me grow under your guidance through your teaching of this module.

As for my strengths, I have been told that I am a likeable person by my superiors in my workplace. I am able to get along well with the other technicians and my colleagues during my employment. There were multiple occasions that we had differing opinions, but I always managed to create a safe environment for everyone to acknowledge each other's opinions and finalize decisions base on team's interest.

I look forward to work on my areas for improvement and to build on my strengths.

Yours Sincerely,

Syahiir

Awareness

“I contend that we (engineers) are undervalued because of our widespread

inability to explain what we do to the general public (and why it is so important).

It is one of the hardest goals to accomplish, to be able to boil down difficult

concepts into a short and easily understood presentation or elevator pitch.”

Marybeth Miceli, President, Miceli Infrastructure Consulting, USA (2011)

From this phrase, I feel that this is true as most of us (engineers) tend to have an incapability to describe their own job scopes and how their jobs are important and crucial. For example, some of us will say ‘ ouh we work as engineers in a aerospace sector... build planes and fix planes.’ but the society does not have that imagination of us doing that. Thus, we tend to get less credit due to lack of awareness about our work. Society tends to think that we engineers are simply doing designs and software like an architecture or a programmer but there are more than it meets the eye. Hence, we as an engineer need to improve on our communication skills to get the general public awareness
